Like human speech, the purpose of music theory is to give clarification and meaning to a piece of music’s construction. Behind every piece of music is the question that music theory attempts to answer, “Why is this piece written the way that it is?”
NOTE: Because music is a form of art, the possibilities of creativity are limitless. Therefore, music theory is not bound by specific laws (as compared to other fields, such as physics) and thus, how the term gets its name.
